Carlo - a complex theatrical educational performance

MáSzínház's theatrical performance Carlo during the RUSzT festival.

A 15-year-old Roma boy, Carlo, lives in the ghetto called Paris. His mother is dead, his father is in prison, and his uncle is the mob boss of the settlement. Carlo wants to break out of his environment, where he is predestined to live either through crime, public work, or support; where studying is the obligatory evil, and passing the high school diploma is downright cheesy; where there is nothing to eat, nothing to heat, and at the age of 15 he has to become the head of a family. For Carlo, this way out could be soccer, in which he is particularly talented, but due to his Roma origin and lack of money, this is not easy either.

Carlo finds himself in a decision situation: either he slips into crime, from which there is no way out, or he decides his fate and breaks out of the ghetto through further education. He oscillates between two poles: secure uncertainty, the settlement, the familiar environment with his family and friends, where he stands out from the rest and is respected; or the unknown is uncertain, where you start at a disadvantage, where you may not be able to perform, and you have to fight more than others for the same goal.

The boy who stands out from his environment, but with poverty and the daily struggle for living, is looking for his place, where he really belongs. What to do with your talent and dreams? Who is for him and who is really against him? What is the price of daring to follow your dreams? Will he be able to live his life differently than everyone around him?
The target groups of the presentation are primarily 12-16-year-olds participating in public education, living in segregated and integrated elementary schools in disadvantaged areas and regions, as well as children's communities in schools, as well as residents of Budapest and rural children's homes. Contemporary slam and rap texts help the reception. The poems of "guerrilla poetry" bring the characters and the story closer to the viewers.

The central question examines several problems with the primary and secondary school age participants of the program: what can I do for my own prosperity without external help despite the unfavorable environment and bad conditions? What options do I have for success in life? What efforts should I make against copy-inherited designs? Who and how can I ask for help to achieve my goals?
